Dad Blog | Freeze-Drying Everything!

I Have Been Slacking

Life is busy and I have been slacking about getting on here and writing. I am trying to finish up my MBA while working, being a dad, starting business ventures, working on projects, and trying to stay up to date on current events. I do not think we ever gave our parents and grandparents enough credit for just how busy we made their lives.

New Business Ventures

We started a little from home business of freeze-drying fruits, candies, and really anything we can think of. It has been fun trying new things to toss in the freeze dryer, and we hope to come up with all sorts of tasty and healthy recipes for snacks, and long-term food storage.

Most people really love the freeze-dried candy, but my favorites are broccoli, cookie dough, ice cream, and bananas with cinnamon.

I'm going to play around with some ingredients and try to make my healthy pre and post workout drinks using the freeze dryer. I will let you know if I have any success.

What would you like to see freeze dried? Drop a comment on here if there's something you think we should try. We are all for ideas!

Chickens

We bought some meat chickens a month or so ago to raise and fill our freezer. Wanting to really know what is in our food and figure meat chickens is by far the easiest meat/livestock animal we could start with. I do intend to build an actual chicken coop and fully fenced in yard so we can get some egg-laying chickens this spring.

It has been a great experience. The girls have helped me setup the brooder, build the mobile coop, and just generally take care of the chickens. Definitely a good learning experience for them and has helped add some responsibility into their routines.

We did have a catastrophe. When we finally put the chickens outside, the dogs dug under one side of the coop just enough that the chicks were crawling out of the coop to the waiting jaws of our dogs. Lemmings... is anyone else old enough to remember the old computer game with lemmings? Our chickens were lemmings crawling to their own death! Fortunately, Alysha caught them after only three of the chickens got mauled so we still have 23 left. Butchering and processing them will probably be the biggest pain, but hopefully I'll get pretty quick at it by the 23rd chicken.

Current Events

The war in and around Israel and the conflict in Ukraine continue to remain interesting developments. I do not know what all is actually going on, but I don't believe the narrative being peddled by big government and the media. I do not believe 5 operators were doing a training exercise in a Blackhawk over the ocean, and I do not believe their families will ever be told the truth about how their loved ones died.

So far nothing crazy and drastic has occurred, but I am not holding my breath. The extremely corrupt government in Ukraine stole significant amounts of the "aid" and "money" that was sent to Ukraine to help. It's almost like all the "conspiracy theorists" said... "The whole thing is just a massive, corrupt, money laundering scheme" Stealing U.S. taxpayers' money to line the pockets of politicians. Anyway, I digress...

I will try to do better about getting on here and writing more consistently. I did take some pictures of the chicken coop we built. I'll write up a how to guide with the project design if anyone wants to copy it.
