We have made MANY mistakes our first time raising meat chickens. We let the dogs get into them once. We let them get too cold a few times. We fed them too much. The portable coop design has flaws, but we learned a lot! We will improve the process and the coop.
We processed the first half of them this past Saturday. The process got smoother every bird we processed. We killed them, drained them, skinned them, then cut them up into their usable parts and pieces. The parts we didn't keep for us got saved for the dogs to eat or to turn into chicken broth. The only parts we threw away were the intestines and bile ducts.
I know there are expensive chicken pluckers on the market and some people prefer to leave the skin on the chicken, but we have never used chicken skin except to toss it in our pressure cooker with the rest of the bones and scraps to make chicken broth.
This next batch of chickens I butcher. I will try to take some pictures of the process showing the little tips and tricks I learned along the way.
More Later
