Pregnancy Blog | The Twins Are Here! (pt 1)

If you haven't heard already, the twins have arrived! They are 2 weeks old so as you can imagine life has been a bit busier around here. It's been quite the whirlwind.

That Monday I got up to run to Walmart for a grocery pickup. On the way there I noticed a couple contractions. Not all that unusual for what I had been feeling the last few weeks. But I decided to take note of times just in case. Starting around 9:00 I continued having contractions every 10 minutes until around noon. Around noon I was sitting on the couch watching tv and eating a small lunch when I noticed contractions were about 6-7 minutes apart. They still weren't painful or getting more intense so I didn't think too much of it and honestly thought they would stop like they had been doing. Mitchell went to Chickasha to buy a large quantity of cow food, again we thought oh these are probably not contractions that are going anywhere. Around 1:30 I texted him to see how far out he was because the contractions were 3-4 minutes apart and getting a little more intense, still not painful. At that point we decided we should probably go in and get checked, just in case. We called and had his dad bring one of his sister's over to the house to watch the other girls and headed to the hospital. We checked in at 3:00 and when they checked my cervix at 3:15 I was at 4 cm dilated and 80% effaced. Honestly I was thinking "oh not a big deal. They will probably just send us home again." When I was pregnant with Ellisyn I was dilated to a 5 and was still working for another week. Boy was I wrong. The nurse said, "Umm go ahead and plan to stay the night." Within 15 minutes they had a room for us and we were moving upstairs.

Once we got settled into our room it was really just a waiting game. We were determined to hold out until at least after midnight because at this hospital any baby born before 35 weeks automatically went to NICU. I was 34 weeks 6 days. Crazy I know. So we decided I would just labor and we wouldn't check me too often to try to make it past midnight. My doctor came and saw us, gave me the okay to eat. Mitchell went and got us dinner. After eating we decided to go ahead and start the process to get an epidural. Even though I still wasn't in pain I wanted to get the epidural because I knew there was still a chance of having to have a c section. Without one, if I had to have a c section they would have to knock me out and I didn't want that. I got my epidural and then all the sudden my blood pressure bottomed out. I have never had that happen. They had to give me a couple meds to get me back to where I was supposed to be. In the midst of all that, my contractions practically stopped. Honestly, if it weren't for that, I'm not sure we would have made it to midnight. But because this happened and didn't start any meds to get them going again right away, we did make it to midnight. After midnight we started Pitocin to get my contractions going again. It was pretty slow going for awhile. We exceeded our midnight goal! Now my only problem was my right side still wasn't numb with my epidural.

A little before 5:00, my nurse checked my cervix again and called my doctor to let her know it was time to come on in. She said to go ahead and head towards to OR(all twins get delivered in the OR) and she would meet us there. They prepped us and rolled us down to the OR. Once my doctor got there, she broke my water because amazingly it still hadn't on it's own. Not long after that, tiny miss Haisley made her debut. I got to hold her for a couple minutes, Mitchell cut her cord and then they took her to do her assessments. In that time, the second baby decided to go from being head down in perfect position to flipping transverse and in an impossible delivery position. My doctor and a couple nurses tried to get her to flip back to where we could still deliver. They tried and tried. While they were doing that another doctor was monitoring her heart, which started dropping and she wasn't tolerating well anymore. At that point my doctor said we need to get her out now. We can't wait. So we converted to an emergency c section... exactly what I was so hoping we could avoid. They transferred me over to the surgical table and put up the blue drapes, etc. I STILL wasn't numb on the right side. I started panicking a little because I was about to be cut open and wasn't numb. The anesthesiologist started pushing all kinds of meds to try to get me numb as quickly as possible. I did feel the initial cut but then was numb after that and only felt lots of pressure and tugging. A few minutes later(even though it felt like forever) Arley was here too. Again I panicked because I didn't hear her crying at first. They took her straight over to do her assessments. She wasn't breathing very well and they put her on oxygen pretty quickly. That was just the beginning of a whole ordeal. Once they got her on oxygen and made sure she was okay, they wrapped her up and brought her over to see me for just a few minutes. One of the nurses told me what the next steps were and what would happen but by then all the medicine I was given was making me very sleepy and out of it so I don't remember most of what she said. They took Arley to a transition room with the hopes that after a little oxygen they could wean her off and she would be able to join us in recovery and then in our postpartum room. Mitchell went with her and they wheeled me off to recovery.

Haisley

I have no idea how long I was in recovery. I don't remember much, other than my doctor coming to check on me and Haisley. From the pictures, I assume I held Haisley the whole time I was in recovery but I'm honestly not sure how because I was so out of it. After awhile they moved us upstairs to postpartum. Mitchell was still with Arley and it wasn't going as we had hoped.
